A parish council has secured £45,000 from Olympics legacy funding.

The cash will be used to create a multi-use games area on the troubled Liberty Park estate in Wainscott, where some residents claim they have been plagued by anti-social behaviour.

The Sport's England Inspired Facilities fund is part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country. Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games.

The new play area will be set within 10 acres of open space at Liberty Park and will include a children’s playground.

Housing developer Crest Nicholson is adding £25,000 to the funds and will provide the play equipment, such as swings, a roundabout and a climbing frame. The multi-use games area is scheduled to open in November this year.

The open space is being transferred to Frindsbury Parish Council - who are also making a financial contribution of £5,000.

Sport England’s chairman, Richard Lewis, said: "This National Lottery investment will create a lasting sporting legacy for Wainscott.

"This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in Medway. It shows we’re offering the legacy that people want for their local community. For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better."

Parish Council chairman David Coomber, said: "We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can make a significant enhancement to the leisure and sporting facilities we provide in the parish.

"We are especially pleased that it will bequeath a legacy of the London 2012 Olympics for our parishioners."
