A rescue mission to free a horse stuck in marshes at Hoo St Werburgh has left Kent Fire and Rescue Services with a sticky problem - they're now stuck in the mud themselves.

Crews were called to Abbots Court Road yesterday afternoon after the mare called Smartie got into difficulty in a stream on the marshland.

The fire service is now waiting for some big machinery to arrive to pull the unit out.

Firefighters spent two hours rescuing the chocolate-coloured horse on Friday afternoon after she got stuck up to her waist.

They received the call at 12.10pm and a special animal rescue unit and crew attended the scene to help.

The horse was a little disorientated and dehydrated following her ordeal, but recovered after a drink of water and something to eat.
