Planners expected to approve flats on site of Trafalgar Centre in High Street, Chatham

Plans to convert a disused shopping mall and town centre car park into flats look set to get the nod.

Chatham's former Trafalgar Centre in the High Street is to be demolished to make way for 175 apartments.

Under the plans put forward by Aylesford-based Terance Butler Holdings, the neighbouring multi-storey car park in Rhode Street would be partially demolished.

Across the three blocks, the developer also wants to create co-working spaces.

Creative arts studios fronting the High Street also feature within the plans, with seven storeys of flats above.

The Trafalgar Centre closed in 2013, while NCP gave up the lease for the car park last year.

Some of the multi-storey would be retained, with flats above. In total, there would be 152 spaces.

Historic England originally raised concerns over how the view from the Naval War Memorial on the Great Lines would be impacted by the height of the development.

The highest block was originally planned to be 11 storeys high but this was later reduced.

The original plans also included 200 apartments and 192 spaces.

The plans will be discussed during a meeting of Medway Council's planning committee on Wednesday. Officers have recommended councillors approve the plans.

If it does go ahead, the developer would need to make more than £220,000 in contributions towards public realm and green space improvements at Chatham Waterfront and The Paddock.

The council recently brought a second round of consultation on how it intends to improve The Paddock – which lies between Chatham Waterfront bus station and the Pentagon shopping centre – to a close.

Terance Butler Holdings would also be expected to contribute more than £114,000 towards health improvements in the area.
