A man who threatened to jump off Rochester Bridge last night (Wednesday) was talked down by police.

The 39-year-old who has not been named, was seen on standing on the Strood-bound carriageway of the bridge shortly before 8pm and a worried member of the public called the police.

Officers were called to the scene at 7.51pm and closed the bridge, so they could speak to him and get him to safety.

One motorist who didn’t want to be named, said: "I was driving over the bridge last night when the police cut across the traffic and blocked the road.”

A spokesman for Medway police said: “The man was removed from the bridge and it was reopened at approximately 8.49pm. The man was taken to hospital for precautionary measures.”
