Residents evacuated from flats in early-morning blaze

People were evacuated from a block of flats early on Wednesday morning after a car and motorbike caught fire in an underground car park.

Ten people were told to leave their homes at 5.30am when smoke began pouring into the flats in Foord Street, Rochester.

Three crews from Strood and Medway fire stations fought the blaze while residents waited outside.

A Strood firefighter said: "It was a serious fire in the car park, but the big issue was the smoke produced, which got into the building.

"The residents are back in now but there is substansial damage to the electrical supply."

The cause of the fire is being probed by fire and police investigators.
