Reprieve for doomed primary school?

A SCHOOL may be saved after the decision to close it was referred back to cabinet at a Medway council meeting last night (Thursday).

St John’s Infants and Ridge Meadow, both in Chatham, and St Peter’s Infant School, in Rochester, were all considered for closure.

Last week cabinet voted against closing the Rochester school but decided to press ahead with the closure of the two others.

Yesterday, councillors on the overview and scutiny committee decided to send the proposal to close St John’s back to the cabinet for reconsideration.

Head teacher at St John’s, Diana Keating, said she was pleased with the decision.

She said: “I think our school put up a very strong case, myself and two parents spoke to the committee and they voted to send it back to cabinet.

“I really don’t know which way the decision will go, some days I think they will save us but other days I think ‘they are talking about reducing empty places’ and we tick that box, so I blow hot and cold.

“But we are hopeful and we live to fight another day.”

A cabinet meeting is scheduled for October 13 but it has not yet been confirmed whether the decision on the school will be made then.
