A man and woman have been arrested after a police chase through Rainham this afternoon.

Officers attempted to get the driver of a silver Ford Mondeo to stop on the A249 at Iwade at about 1.45pm.

The car was followed through Upchurch, Lower Rainham and on to the A2.

Police caught up with the vehicle on the Bowater's roundabout, by Tesco supermarket, at about 2pm.

Paramedics were called to the scene but it is unclear why.

"I was crossing the road with my daughter in her buggy and he almost ran us over" - witness

Witnesses described seeing several police cars and the silver Mondeo stopped in the middle of the road.

One woman, who did not want to be named, said the chase went past her in Birling Avenue, opposite Rainham library.

She said: "I was crossing the road with my daughter in her buggy and he almost ran us over.

"The car came speeding up Berengrave Lane, and skidded around the corner and then sped onto the A2 towards Gillingham.

"It looked like there was a man driving and a woman in the passenger seat. He was being followed by six police cars."
