Woman pensioner injured in collision near Hempstead Valley shopping centre, Gillingham

A pedestrian in her 70s suffered serious injuries after a crash on a busy dual carriageway.

Investigators are seeking witnesses following the collision involving a car and the pensioner in Gillingham.

The woman remains in hospital following the incident, which happened on the A278 Hoath Way, near a roundabout and junction for Sharsted Way and Hempstead valley shopping centre. She was taken to a London hospital after being treated by paramedics at the scene.

The road was closed in both directions between the Hempstead Valley and Gillingham Business Park roundabouts while officers carried out an investigation.

The Gillingham-bound side of the road remained shut for longer while a vehicle was recovered.

Police spokesman Andy Saunders said: "The collision was reported at 4.55pm on Tuesday. It involved a black Volkswagen Golf and a woman aged in her 70s.

"The driver of the car, which had been travelling in the direction of Gillingham, stopped following the collision."
