An outbreak of coronavirus at a military barracks has seen 51 people struck down with Covid-19.

Brompton Barracks, in Gillingham, implemented a programme of mass asymptomatic testing last week for the 500 people based at the site who were returning after spending Christmas with their families.

It found 32 new cases of the virus, adding to the 19 previous positive tests returned before Christmas.

The site is currently used as a training ground for army personnel to "maintain critical operation outputs."

There is a mix of soldiers and civilians based at the Barracks in Wood Street.

Before Christmas, the decision was made to end training and disperse for the festive period early, so people could get home to their families safely.

An Army spokesperson said: "Training at Brompton Barracks is needed in order to maintain critical operational outputs.

"All activity will be conducted in line with PHE guidance as far as practicable and any service personnel who experiences symptoms will be isolated in accordance with PHE guidelines.

"Testing is just one of many safety measures aimed at minimising the risk of COVID-19 to our Armed Forces as they carry out their duties.

"The MOD is following all Public Health England advice including observing social distancing and self-isolation guidelines.

"It will not tolerate any breaches and administrative action will be taken against anyone found to have wilfully ignored them."

Anyone who tested positive, and those who have been in contact with them on the barracks, are now self-isolating.

All social areas on-site have been closed to make sure there are no spaces for people to mix in large groups.

This includes the barrack's cook-house, which is covid regulation complaint, as everyone has to wear a mask and wash their hands regularly.

There are three staff based in the eating area to ensure guidelines are being adhered to.
