Mystery of red hearts appearing across Rochester

Dozens of red hearts springing up on walls, pillar boxes, pavements and buildings across Rochester have got residents all in a flutter.

The cupid-like logos have been appearing in the town and surrounding roads for several weeks.

Rumours have emerged that it could be an early Valentine's message, a romantic gesture from a love-struck partner.

Or perhaps it's a promotion to remind us that Mother's Day is in March.

The signs are a slightly different design but all the same colour. Some are stickers, some painted and some drawn in chalk.

One, off Maidstone Road, has the letter "H" in the middle, while another – painted high on a wall in Blue Boar Lane – has the words "Be complicit" around it.

Ward councillor Stuart Tranter thought he had got to the heart of the mystery when he caught a man red-handed plastering stickers of the symbols of love opposite his home.

Cllr Tranter and his wife Sarah were strolling into Rochester one evening about two weeks ago when they confronted the person placing the stickers on a bollard at the junction of Roebuck Road and St Margaret's Street.

The suspect sped off in a 4x4 vehicle but then returned to assure the councillor they would be removed the following day.

When Cllr Tranter asked what was behind the escapade, an answer was not forthcoming. He added he had informed the council's legal department and discussions would be held with property owners to remove them.

At the time of going to press, the hearts remain and more have appeared in Maidstone Road, The Vines and Blue Boar Lane.
