National Highways tweeted at 5.30pm warning motorists of the accident.

It said: “There is currently approximately four miles of congestion on the approach, causing delays of 30 minutes above usual journey times.”

They then posted an update at 7.38pm, saying that the road was cleared and all lanes had been reopened.

A spokesperson from the ambulance service confirmed that three people were checked at the scene, with one taken to hospital for further treatment.
