Station vortex puts commuters in a spin

Take care if you’re walking past Rochester railway station – it looks like a huge hole has appeared.

Don’t worry, you won’t fall through the pavement, but you might be transported to a magical underworld of art and creativity.

The mind-bending chalk artwork – ‘Jump into Creativity’ – was created by artists from Marvellous Murals to launch Medway’s first Paint the Town Festival.

There was also a dance performance entitled Two Pints of Lager and a Piece of Contemporary Dance as the seven-day theatre and arts festival got under way.

There are 25 events, including theatre shows, baby beatbox workshops, comedy and art displays.

Tonight brings the show "The 56" - a powerful piece of performance art commemorating the 1985 Bradford City stadium fire - to Priestfield Stadium in Gillingham at 7pm.

Saturday's diverse events include a one woman show "Can I Help You" in which Rhiannon Armstrong comes equipped with sewing kits, philosophical advice, handcream and more, ready to offer help to anyone who might need it in Rochester High Street from 10am to 1pm.

There's also an Intro to Beatbox at Riverside One Studios in Dock Road, Chatham, from 10.45am to 11.45am; the Princess and the Frog Ballet will be performed at 12.15pm and 2pm; and Denmarked - an autobiographical performance of "tales from the council estate" told through storytelling, singing and rapping - will begin at Chatham Historic Dockyard at 8pm.

Produced by Lyrici Arts in partnership with Battersea Arts Centre, the project aims to bring some of the best in contemporary culture to the Towns.
