It is understood the fire started in a bag of rubbish which had been left at the front door of the address, which is managed by the AMAT charity.

The flames had been put out by the time the crews arrived at the scene and a man who had helped extinguish them, suffered what is thought to be minor burns as a result.

Police were also called to the scene and a woman from Chatham was arrested on suspicion of arson.

She was later charged with arson with intent to endanger life.

Lucy Parker, 50, appeared before magistrates in Medway this morning but didn't enter a plea in relation to the charge.

The case was adjourned and sent to the crown court to be dealt with.

Parker, of Institute Road, Chatham, was granted bail to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on May 15.
