One traveller, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: "I was on a train back to Rainham when the train made an unscheduled stop at Strood shortly before 6pm.

"After a few minutes we got the message that there was a trespasser on the line at Rochester and the power had been switched off.

"However, about 20 minutes later we were told that the police were on the scene and another 15 minutes later we were told that the police helicopter had been called into action."

Officers were called to Rochester High Street at around 5.30pm to the incident, alongside British Transport officers.

A man in his 30s, of no fixed address, was arrested and remains in police custody while the investigation continues.
