Work has been going on by SGN, a British gas distribution company, since March.

According to the traffic website, one.network, the roadworks are taking place in order to upgrade the area's gas network to ensure "homes and businesses have a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come".

In January it was announced that the Esplanade was due to be closed for five weeks for gas works.

However it was delayed until Monday, February 6, after it was suggested many residents had not been properly notified.

Three weeks of work had also been planned to take place in College Yard and The Precinct from March 6, but that was also rearranged.

The Precinct was later closed from Friday, March 10, and is set to remain shut until Monday, May 8.
