A motorist had a lucky escape when his car burst into flames as he was driving along the M2.

The incident happened as the driver, who has not been named, was going along the coastbound carriageway between the Chatham and Gillingham junctions.

Another motorist behind him flashed him to pull over as he could see flames underneath the car.

The man pulled over to the hard shoulder and got out of his Peugeot 307 before the fire took hold.

Firefighters from Medway fire station were called out to deal with the burning vehicle at about 8pm on Thursday.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The car has been totally destroyed by the fire.

“We were on the scene for about 45 minutes.”
