Girl's special way to remember war heroes and raise hundreds for this year's British Legion Poppy Appeal

She desperately wanted a special poppy to wear for Remembrance Sunday but when she couldn’t get one, Charlotte-Mae decided to make her own.

The 10-year-old logged on to YouTube to watch a tutorial teaching her how to crochet a poppy to wear with pride.

After mastering the technique, she decided to make a few more for family and friends and now she’s making them non-stop.

Proud mum Kelly Cullen posted a photo of the finished article on Facebook and orders for the pretty poppies started rolling in. Charlotte-Mae’s crochet creations got about 100 likes and lots of shares within a few hours.

Over the past few days the youngster, who attends Park Wood Junior School in Rainham, has been busy crocheting to keep up with demand and decided she would donate all the money raised to the Poppy Appeal.

When her head teacher Alex Moir discovered what she had been up to, he ordered another 50 for all his staff to wear.

Mr Moir will be donating £50 to the appeal on Charlotte-Mae’s behalf and with her other orders still coming in, she is set to raise several hundreds pounds for the cause.

Mrs Cullen, from Darland, Chatham, said: “She went to see the poppies at the Tower of London last year and wanted her grandad to get her a sparkle poppy like the celebrities wear on X Factor.

“But then she decided she would see if she could learn how to make one on YouTube and she did just that.

“It all went mad after I posted a photo of the crochet poppies on Facebook and she got lots of orders and was selling them for 50p each.”

Mrs Cullen added: “She’s such a good girl and is so kind. I know she’s my daughter, but I think its amazing what she’s doing.”
