Safety petition after crash at junction of Lordswood Lane and North Dane Way, Lordswood, claims life of Lawrence 'Loz' Dick

An online petition calling for increased safety at a road junction has been launched.

The campaign is to make changes to the road between Lordswood Lane and North Dane Way, Lordswood.

It comes following a fatal collision in which motorcyclist Lawrence Dick was killed around 6pm on Wednesday, July 21.

The 36-year-old engineer had been travelling to his home in Wigmore when he collided with a Nissan X-Trail.

The Change.org petition has so far been been signed by more than 700 people.

Creator Sharon Amis wrote: "As all locals will know, the Lordswood Lane/North Dane Way junction is dangerous.

"There have been many accidents and a fatal one most recently.

"This has been an ongoing issue for as many years as I care to remember.

"I’m not an expert in making a change but I can’t sit back and keep letting this happen to my community.

"Something desperately needs to happen to this particular junction before we have more fatalities.

"There is talk of further housing developments for this particular area which will create a lot more traffic on North Dane Way, in turn making the Lordswood Lane junction even more dangerous."

Last week we reported how nearby residents Jon Sefton and Hazel Brooks tried to help Mr Dick after seeing the accident.

Mr Sefton told how he felt something needed to be done to make the junction safer as he'd known 11 accidents in 20 years.

He said: "There needs to be a roundabout or speed camera in there, something to help.

"We're talking about people dying or being seriously injured here; it's people's loved ones at risk."

Mr Dick's father John spoke this week to pay tribute to his late son.

He said: "Lawrence liked to keep things simple, he had a few close friends but many more in a wider circle," he added.

"He was a caring, selfless friend to everyone that knew him."

Michael Edwards, Medway Council’s head of transport and parking, said: “On behalf of the council, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the gentleman who sadly passed away.

"We will respond to any petitions we receive which may include looking into the matter further, considering the petition at a council meeting or holding a public meeting or consultation.

"However, we would not be able to take this matter forward until after the police have concluded their investigations.”
