A murder suspect broke down in tears and sobbed “it’s a nightmare” when he was arrested, a court heard.

After being taken to Medway Police Station, Robert Alderman told police officers: “It hasn’t sunk in yet. I can’t believe I’m being done for murder.”

Alderman, 22, of Canadian Avenue, Gillingham, denies murdering father of five Paul Scott and an alternative charge of manslaughter.

He admits affray and assaulting Mr Scott’s brother Gary Chaplin.

Maidstone Crown Court has heard that Alderman inflicted fatal injuries on Mr Scott, 43, after he saw him damaging wing mirrors on cars in Balmoral Road, Gillingham, late at night.

Alderman is alleged to have asked Mr Scott what he was doing and then repeatedly punched him and kicked and stamped on him while he was on his knees on the ground.

An ambulance was called but Mr Scott went home. Later it was found his right leg was broken and he died four days later on February 14 from a pulmonary embolism – a blood clot in a main artery in the lung.

The jury was today shown the recorded video of Alderman’s police interview in which he broke down holding his head in his hands.

After watching the CCTV footage of the incident, he said: “I didn’t mean any of this to happen”.

He said he thought he had only hit out once and “seriously can’t remember” the sequence of events.

After originally saying he had felt “a bit tipsy”, he then concluded: “I must have had more to drink than I thought”

Alderman had left Bliss nightclub in Canterbury Street because he needed to get more money to buy drinks. On returning to the club the doorman noticed blood on his clothing.

Alderman told him he had been in an argument with five people in the Aldi car park.

Mr Scott and his family had spent the evening at the Palm Cottage social club, also in Canterbury Street.
