An eyewitness told KentOnline: “I could just hear the sirens and thought that was a bit odd and as I turned the corner there were fire engines outside.

“It was very noisy.”

Kent Fire and Rescue Service confirmed their attendance to the Burger King branch at 3pm was a false alarm.

A spokesman said: "The smoke had been caused by an overheating switch, which was then isolated."

The emergency vehicles left after 15 minutes.
