Rio Ferdinand enjoys meal and poses for pictures at Parkwood Cafe in Rainham

Diners tucking into breakfast at a popular cafe were given a shock this morning when one of the most recognisable faces in football walked in.

Former Man United and England star Rio Ferdinand popped into the Parkwood Cafe in Rainham for bacon, eggs and toast.

The 44-year-old, who now works regularly as a TV pundit, was happy to pose for pictures with excited staff and customers.

Among those eating was Peter Harrison-Brookes, who said Ferdinand took time out of his visit to make the day of those at the eatery in Parkwood Green.

"When I arrived at the cafe my wife told me Rio Ferdinand was sitting opposite," he said.

"A small child asked if he could have a picture and Mr Ferdinand said yes, when he’s finished his breakfast. "Upon finishing his breakfast he beckoned over the children and posed for photos and took some with the staff.

"He was very understated and polite whilst being humble enough to make children’s day - a true credit to the man."

The owner of the cafe, who only wanted his name given as Reggie, added the ex-footballer was “respectful” and a “good lad”.

“Everyone was excited in the cafe when he came in about 10-15 minutes after we opened,” he said.

“Before he left I shook his hand and thanked him for coming in. I then asked if he would have a picture with the staff as they really wanted one with him.

“He was a good lad and respectful.”
