Medway Messenger readers can help name a Guide Dog puppy

A Medway charity had a record year of fundraising in 2017 - thanks to its dedicated team of supporters and a little bit of help from this newspaper.

Guide Dogs Medway was one of the Medway Messenger's chosen charities in 2017 and volunteers banked a record £38,747 during those 12 months.

More than £5,000 of this was raised through its partnership with the Medway Messenger which means this newspaper can choose a name for a future guide dog puppy - and we want help from our readers.

Our news team has come up with a list of suggestions and these have been approved by the Guide Dogs Association.

These are:

Clark - in memory of much-loved Medway Messenger news editor Sarah Clarke who passed away earlier this year after a battle with cancer.

Ruby - in honour of brave schoolgirl Ruby Young who inspired a massive fundraising campaign when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer but is now making a full recovery.

Zane - means gift from God and a guide dog will be a gift to its owner because of the difference it will make to their life.

Angel - means Messenger in Latin.

You can choose your favourite by emailing medwaymessenger@thekmgroup.co.uk, voting on Twitter @medwaymessenger or commenting below.

You can also write to us at Medway Messenger, Medway House, Ginsbury Close Sir Thomas Longley Road, Medway City Estate, Strood, ME2 4DU.

The top choices will then be given to the Guide Dogs to name a puppy which is starting its training in the coming months.

Last year, Guide Dogs Medway supporters and volunteers took part in the KM Big Quiz, two KM Abseils, the KM Dragon Boat Race, KM Big Bike Ride and KM Big Walk which all helped boost coffers.

Some supporters enjoyed the KM events so much last year they have signed up again this year to to bike ride, the dragon boat race and the Big Walk.

Fiona Byers, branch treasurer, said: “I am continually amazed by the great support our band of local volunteers give us in our fundraising activities come rain or shine.

“I thank each and every one of those who assisted us in 2017 and look forward to working with them and maybe a few new volunteers also as we chase our targets for 2018.

“The help of the KM Charity Team and KM editorial staff is also very much appreciated and has helped us put Medway Branch firmly on the map for 2018.

“Finally the generosity of the Medway public is second to none and we constantly are reminded of this at our events and collections.

“Guide Dogs have a saying every penny counts. It certainly does when received from the generous people of Medway.”
