Four teenagers have been arrested after they allegedly tried to rob a man at gunpoint.

The teens - aged 13, 14, 15 and 16 - were arrested in connection with an attempted robbery on a man in his 20s after he travelled from Gillingham to Gravesend on a train.

They were held on suspicion of attempted robbery after they are said to have followed the victim, 24, when he got off the train.

The incident is said to have happened shortly after 11pm on Thursday in Sheppy Place, not far from the Man of Kent pub. The victim was threatened with what is believed to be a handgun.

As the victim tried to run away from the scene, one of the gang is said to have fired the gun before fleeing. No one was injured.

The gang are then said to have boarded a train to Gillingham, but were stopped by officers leaving it and arrested.

When the carriage was searched the hand gun, believed to be a blank-firing pistol, was found and the arrests were made. The group was taken into custody to be questioned by police in Medway.

A pair of bolt croppers were also found in the carriage and the 13-year-old was alleged to have been carrying a knife.

Station staff also called police after they found a half-empty case of bullets on the platform.

Forensic officers also found a spent bullet case when they searched Sheppy Place.

The 13-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and the 14-year-old of going equipped for theft in relation to the bolt croppers being found in the train carriage on which they had all travelled back to Medway.

Officers also found a bike on the train and it is understood all four were arrested on suspicion of stealing it earlier that evening.

All four arrested were later bailed pending further inquiries.
