Hunt for Rainham woman, Phyillis, after she helps West Malling couple, Derek and Freda Matthews, after collapse at Victoria Station, London

A woman is trying to find a kind stranger who came to her aid when her husband collapsed.

Freda and Derek Matthews were at Victoria station in London when Mr Matthews, who had just had an operation in hospital, became unwell.

Mrs Matthews, 74, said the good samaritan, who said her name was Phyllis and was on her way to Rainham, went straight over to help. Mrs Matthews said: “Derek collapsed and I was trying to hold him up, while she did everything else.

“She did all the running around, I couldn’t do anything. She found him a chair first and then rushed to get tissues and paper towels when he was sick. She wouldn’t leave us. She missed the train she was meant to get and stayed with us the entire time until the ambulance and paramedics arrived.

"She just wanted to make sure we were all right. I was in a bit of a panic, but she was so good. I’m so grateful" - Freda Matthews

“I was concentrating on Derek so much, and I don’t feel I really gave her a proper thank-you. I didn’t even get her last name. But it would be nice to be able to see her, or at least send her a bunch of flowers.”

The incident happened on November 25. Mrs Matthews added: “She had a bit of an accent, possibly Scottish. And I would say probably in her 30s.”

The couple live in West Malling, and Mr Matthews, 83, recovered from his turn and is now doing much better.

Their daughter Mandy put out a thank-you on Twitter this week to find “good samaritan Phyllis, from Rainham”.
