A busy Medway pub was evacuated last night after a man made threats to drinkers and door staff in the rear garden.

People were asked to leave JD Wetherspoon-owned The Golden Lion in High Street, Rochester at 9.45pm.

They spilled on to the High Street but the noise created a disturbance to neighbours nearby.

Resident Chelsea Wood said: "I've had at least 100+ drunks screaming outside and now one very wide awake baby."

Kentonline reporter Brad Harper was there and said: "Everyone was kicked out at about 9.45pm because of an incident in the rear garden.

"They were let back in at about 10.20pm. From what I understand, it was a dispute with a bouncer."

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Police were called at 9.40pm on Friday 17 July to a disturbance at a premises in Rochester High Street.

During the incident, a man is reported to have behaved in a threatening manner towards other members of the public and door staff.

Officers attended and arrested an 18-year-old man from Rochester on suspicion of assault. He remains in custody as enquiries continue.

No serious injuries have been reported."

A Wetherspoon spokesman said: “ There was a disturbance in the garden at around 10.30pm. A group of four males were ejected for behavioural issues.

“One of the group then snuck back in through another entrance and attacked a member of door staff.

“The pub garden was full of customers and a number of them, not in any way connected to the group, began throwing glasses and plates.

“The pub manager stopped service at the bar.

“Once the garden was cleared of the group who were involved in throwing glasses and plates, service resumed.

“It is important to note that there was no evacuation of the premises.

“We condemn the behaviour of a small group of people who caused this disturbance and apologise to our loyal customers.”
