Medway will not host the Senegal Olympic team ahead of this year’s Games as planned.

The African nation was due to use Gillingham FC’s facilities in the run up to the Games in London, which begin next month.

Medway Council’s Olympics boss Bob Dimond told the Medway Messenger last month there was uncertainty over whether the west African nation would be based in the Towns.

Gillingham chairman Paul Scally said the club was "disappointed" at the news and revealed work had been done to try and secure a friendly as part of the Gills’ pre-season preparations.

The club were due to face Senegal in a friendly in April, but this was cancelled due to confusion over who had the authority over the nation’s fixtures.

He said: "We began to suspect a few weeks ago that there might have been a change of heart because of a lack of information, but Medway Council was unable to get a definite answer either way.

"Although we are slightly put out, it is obviously a bigger disappointment for the Medway public who won’t be able to see a full national Olympic squad in training for the world’s biggest sports event."

Senegal have been drawn against Great Britain, Uruguay and the United Arab Emirates.
