An earthquake-like rumble was felt in homes in a Rochester road last night following an electrical fault.

Two crews from Medway fire station were called to Watson Avenue to reports of a fire under an electrical supply service cover in the ground.

A spokesman for the service said: "The supply cover was alight and it was making the ground rumble like a mini earthquake.

"You could feel the wires exploding and bubbling underneath your feet."

Firefighters lifted the cover to see heavy smoke underground. The crews had to replace the cover and wait for electricity supplier EDF to come and isolate the power supply.

The incident began at around 11pm. One fire crew stayed at the scene for two hours until EDF arrived.
