A medical student who got in her mother’s car after a vodka session crashed it into a lamppost two streets from her home and may have ruined her career prospects in the process.

Ilma Roman was over the drink-driving limit when she drove her mum’s Vauxhall Mokka.

But the 20-year-old, who is hoping to become a doctor, didn’t get very far before she crashed at the bottom of Fort Pitt Hill, Chatham.

She admitted drink driving and may not be able to finish her course as a result of her conviction.

Magistrates heard after the crash an ambulance had been called and paramedics thought she was intoxicated, so called the police.

Roman was given a roadside breath test and was over the limit. After a visit to hospital, she was given further tests and gave a reading of 77 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Roman, who lives in student halls in Wandsworth but at the time was staying at her mum’s in Boundary Road, Chatham, admitted drink-driving when she appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on October 4.

Rajni Prashar, prosecuting, said the crash happened in Fort Pitt Hill, where it meets New Road, at about 6pm on August 24.

When she was interviewed she told police she had been drinking earlier during the day.

Roman, who was studying to be a doctor at St George’s Hospital in West London, may not be able to finish her course after informing tutors about the charge.

The court was told it could have jeopardised her whole career now she has a conviction as all employees of the British Medical Association are required to have a criminal record check.

Magistrates told Roman she had put herself in a very difficult position and had made a stupid mistake that day.

They banned her from driving for 17 months and fined her £100 and ordered she pay a victim surcharge of £40 as well as £85 costs and if she completes a drink-driving course, her ban will be reduced by a quarter.
