Domestic violence helpline launched

A rise in the number of cases of domestic violence in the Towns has led to a specialist helpline being launched for victims.

Increasing incidences of domestic abuse has led Citizens Advice Medway to set up a new service to provide assistance to those being targeted.

Between March and November 2008 there were 2,512 reported incidents of domestic abuse in Medway. This is compared to 2,351 reports for the same period in 2007.

Ch Supt Lee Catling, chairman of the Kent and Medway Domestic Violence Strategy Group and head of Kent Police’s Public Protection Unit, said: “Domestic abuse is a serious issue. It is the leading cause of death for women aged between 19 and 44.

“It can happen in any home, regardless of race, sexuality, age, class or educational level.

“Domestic abuse has gone from being a silent crime to one that receives much attention from government, statutory bodies and the voluntary sector.

“While figures have increased, we continually encourage victims to come forward and report this horrendous crime.”

The domestic abuse telephone helpline will offer victims a range of assistance, from help escaping an abusive situation, finding refuge places and advice on housing rights and welfare benefits, to applying for a court order to protect them and their children.

Peter Stokes, Citizens Advice Medway chief executive, said: “Unfortunately we are seeing more and more need for this service as more and more people are faced with abuse.

“Abuse doesn’t just mean actual violence but threatening behaviour, verbal abuse and control.

“The service will be available to everyone who is faced with abuse from within their family or relationship. Not just the stereotypical man on woman but same sex relationships, woman on man and between family members.”

The domestic abuse telephone helpline operates weekdays from 8.30am to 4.30pm. Victims across Kent and Medway can call 01634 576083.
