The retired doctor, born in Hanoi in Vietnam, was on holiday with husband Dr Chau Ming Shum – also a doctor who works at Walderslade Village Surgery – when their camper van rolled down a ramp, injuring both of them.

Ms Patel added a narrative element to the road traffic collision verdict, stating Dr Shum had exited the passenger side of the stationary Mercedes van, which was positioned on a ramp leading to a car park at the Plaza Mercedes Domenech.

Her husband had also got out of the vehicle which then began to roll down the 11% slope.

Both of them had attempted to stop it but had been unable to do so and the vehicle continued to roll towards the car park entrance.

Thu sustained fatal injuries including a traumatic brain injury, skull fracture and other multiple injuries.

Earlier in the hearing a statement had been read from the couple's son, Dr Oliver Shum, who explained his parents had been travelling around Spain when the incident occurred.

"Upon arriving Chau and Thu were unsure if the car park had sufficient vertical clearance," he said, and explained Thu had got out of the van to check.

Chau had also got out of the van, because Thu had been unsure about the vehicle's height.

"Thu made her way towards the drivers side, when it began roll down the entry ramp," he added. "Both Chau and Thu attempted to stop the vehicle."

While Thu was fatally injured, Chau was also trapped under the van, which had to be lifted by the fire service in order to rescue him.

He was taken to hospital in Spain to be treated for serious injuries.

A statement from the police also outlined how the husband and wife had tried to position themselves in front of the vehicle to stop it rolling, but that it had picked up speed.

The police said there were no suspicious circumstances. It was also noted that the automatic control level of the vehicle was found to be in neutral position.
