Woman seen sitting on Arriva 164 bus dashboard being driven around Chatham

An investigation has been launched after a bus was seen being driven with a woman sitting with both legs up on the dashboard.

Bus company Arriva says it is taking the incident “extremely seriously” after footage of her next to the windscreen of a 164 service in Chatham emerged yesterday (September 6).

One person onboard was mum Angela Louise Fox, who says what happened was “absolutely disgusting”.

“It was totally unsafe and irresponsible,” she said.

“She is endangering her own and the other passengers’ lives by blocking the driver’s side view.

“The two buses she went round on were school buses, so [were] full of children.

“It’s absolutely disgusting.

“She was on the 3.50pm and the 4.30pm 164 service from Chatham bus station and sat at the front on both journeys – there were plenty of seats available.

“If the driver had to brake hard, she would have gone flying through that window and be dead.

“It's just so irresponsible and shocking.”

Arriva says an inquiry is now under way.

A spokesman said: “Arriva has been made aware of an incident on the 164 bus from Chatham station on Wednesday, September 6.

“The matter is being taken extremely seriously and is now the subject of a full investigation.

“The safety of passengers, our drivers and other road-users is extremely important to us.”

Advice from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) says to operate a bus, drivers should “use the windows, wipers, demisters and climate and ventilation controls so that you can see clearly.”

It adds “the windscreen and other windows should be clean and free from obstructions”.
