Altercation in Gillingham shop lead on to alleged assault

A woman was allegedly assaulted after being approached by a man in a shop.

The incident started in an off-licence in Linden Road, Gillingham, at around 6pm on the evening of Friday, October 7.

After an altercation in the shop, they both got in a car, where it is alleged she was assaulted, her clothing damaged and a necklace stolen.

The car stopped near Marlborough Road and both got out, and a member of the public became concerned about her welfare, but both man and woman got back in the car and drove off.

A man was arrested the following day.
Now police are appealing for witnesses.

PC Chelsea Clare said: "We are appealing for anybody who witnessed the altercation at the off-licence shop in Linden Road to call us.

She said: "We would also like to hear from the member of the public who intervened near Marlborough Road."

*Charlie Carey, 19, of Priestfield Road, Gillingham, appeared before Medway Magistrates Court on Monday, October 10, charged with assault and criminal damage.

He was bailed to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on November 7.
