Decision to close St John's delayed

A controversial decision to shut a primary school has been put on hold by Medway Council.

The authority’s cabinet met this afternoon (Tuesday) to consider objections made to a statutory notice announcing the closure of St John’s in Chatham at the end of this academic year.

The council has decided to hold off on making a final decision so a review can be done on how shutting the school will impact places at faith schools in the Towns.

St Nicholas C of E Infant School and All Faith's Community School have been saved after councillors rejected officers recommendations to merge them.

A campaign has been waged against the council’s decision to close St John’s, with parents, pupils and staff petitioning councillors and officers.

Fourteen other schools are to close by 2014 and be replaced by seven new primary schools.
