A couple were left puzzled when they complained about blood in their chicken kebab - and were told chickens don't have blood.

Mum-of-two Louise Laker claims she was tucking into her favourite takeaway when she discovered some of the meat wasn't cooked.

Her husband Richard immediately rang the Rochester Grill, High Street where they had ordered the food, to complain.

Manager Khan Duru arrived on their doorstep in Nashenden Road, Rochester, 30 minutes later - but refused to give them a refund.

Mr Laker claims he was told it was not possible for the kebab to have blood in it because chickens do not have blood.

The 26-year-old said: "I then showed him and he told me that it's not blood and suggested we had tampered with it to get our money back.

"When I then went on to inform him I would seek independent advice he tried snatching the chicken off me, at which point I held his fingers until he released the piece."

Mrs Laker, 31, said: "The manager wasn't apologetic at all. He accused us of putting it in there to get our money back. But the kebab only cost £6, why would we go to all that effort for £6?

"I felt sick afterwards knowing I had eaten some of that kebab. We have been going to the Rochester Grill for years, but we definitely won't be going back there again."

Mr Duru, manager at Rochester Grill, said: "I am 100% sure that chicken was cooked. There was only a tiny dot of blood. You don't usually get blood in chicken, only in red meat.

"I could not given them a refund because they had already eaten most of the kebab. I offered to give them a new chicken kebab, but they did not want it."

The couple reported the issue to Medway Council's environmental heath team.

A spokesman said: "Officers visited the premises and found the preparation and cooking practices satisfactory and legally compliant. There is no public health risk. The premises are due for a follow up inspection in the near future."
