Matt Haines suffered the disappointment of defeat on his Walker Cup debut for Great Britain & Ireland at the weekend.

The Chatham 19-year-old (pictured) won one match and halved another but lost his two other matches as GB&I were beaten 16.5-9.5 by the USA in the biennial men's amateur international golf competition at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania.

The Rochester & Cobham player enjoyed a good day on Saturday, winning his foursomes with Scotland's Gavin Dear 1 up against Peter Uihlein and Nathan Smith, and then securing a half with Morgan Hoffman.

But Haines was beaten twice on Sunday, losing his singles 2&1 to Rickie Fowler and his foursomes with Dear 3&2 to Brian Harman and Adam Mitchell.
