Car crashes into The Harrow Inn, Lidsing, sparking road safety campaign

A couple who run a pub near Gillingham have started a road safety campaign after a car crashed into the side of their pub.

Kris and Lisa Orme run The Harrow Inn in Lidsing, which is on a crossroads between Lidsing Road, Westfield Sole Road and Blind Lane.

Yesterday, a car was shunted into the side of the pub after it was hit by another car.

Mrs Orme, 43, said the road is particularly dangerous as there are no warning signs for motorists.

“The problem is there’s no road signs or markings to show people are coming up to a junction.

“A car clipped the back of a young girl's car and it went into the side of the pub.

“The young girl was very lucky - she walked away with just a burn on her arm from the air bag.”

Mrs Orme, who has lived above the pub with her husband for seven years, said the pub's outside wall will have to knocked down and rebuilt.

Another wall inside the pub has also been damaged and photos taken after the crash also show some damage in the men's toilets.

The couple have started a petition to have the speed limit reduced and traffic calming measures put in place.

Mrs Orme, said: “People drive down this lane like absolute idiots. It’s not just the cars its the great big lorries as well.

“It is a 60 mile an hour limit, but you don’t have to drive at 60, even if you know the road, you drive to the road conditions.

“I’m surprised its taken seven years for a car to go into the side of the building.”

The pub remains open but will have to close in the next few weeks for two days, to allow the repairs to be carried out.
