Medway's new cancer care unit is finally a reality after
contractors handed over the keys to the building.

Staff are now busy putting the final touches to the centre, at
Medway Maritime Hospital, in Gillingham, ready for its first intake
of patients at the start of next month.

The unit means cancer patients in Medway and Swale will be able
to receive their chemotherapy close to home.

Existing haematology patients will be treated in a bright,
purpose-built ward.

Before it was built cancer patients had to travel to hospitals
further afield for treatment.

Macmillan fund-raisers and patients were given a sneak preview
of the facility on Tuesday.
