Callous thief dupes Wainscott woman, 88

A thief has conned a trusting elderly woman after she let him into her home.

The 88-year-old woman, who has not been named, was tricked when he knocked on her door in Windmill Close, Wainscott, saying he was from the local Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

The incident happened between 7 and 7.30pm on Monday when he said he would be doing checks on her home to ensure elderly people in the area were safe.

He then asked to use the toilet and e took a number of items, including about £500 cash, two handbags, jewellery and bank and loyalty cards.

Police investigating the incident have warned homeowners be on the alert for distraction burglars tricking their way into homes.

The man police would like to speak to is Asian, between 37 and 43 years, 5ft 6in tall, of large build and clean shaven.

He was wearing a black cap, beige cardigan, dark trousers and gloves.

Officers and crime scene investigators have carried out their investigations and say enquiries are on going.
