The route is next to the River Medway and leads to Strood Railway Station but there have been no reports of significant disruption to traffic in the area.

Maxine Vines, who lives in Kingswear Gardens, said: "The building has been slowly falling apart since the weekend, the road has been cordoned off.

"Some of the building has come down, not all of it but the side of it has. Nothing too drastic, just some of the brickwork.

"People have been there a while clearing it up. So much has happened on that road."

South Thames Gateway (STG) Building Control Partnership, which manages building control in Medway, is aware of the incident and is liaising with the building owner who will be carrying out works to the property.

As Canal Road is not a through road for traffic, disruption to motorists will be minimal.

However, there is no estimated date for the road to be fully reopened – it will depend on the works.
