Firefighters have been called to a blaze in a derelict building for a second time in one week.

Crews were sent to the abandoned property in Brompton Road, Gillingham, near the Great Lines Heritage Park.

Two fire engines attended and crews, wearing breathing apparatus, put the fire out using a hose reel jet shortly after 3pm.

There were no reported injuries, and the cause is not yet known.

A passerby, who did not wish to be named, said: “I was just near the area when it happened when I noticed a fire engine outside. It went after a few minutes.

“When I went near the building there was a burning smell.

“The entrance to the derelict building is wide open from the side of the park. The place is filled with needles, rats, a large amount of rubbish and rubble.

“It is a really dangerous place and large groups of children go there all the time. Medway Council should be contacted as it needs to be demolished.”

It is the second time in the past week firefighters have been called to a blaze at the building.

On Sunday (September 17), two crews were called just after midday and spent around half an hour putting out the flames using a hose reel jet.

There were no reported injuries, and the fire is believed to have been started deliberately.
