The vigil aims to highlight the opposition to defence cuts.

It is one of dozens set to take place all over the country, organised through a Facebook campaign. Protesters are being encouraged to wear yellow, the colour of peace.

Former soldiers, families of victims and families of serving soldiers are expected to take part at the naval war memorial on the Great Lines at 11am.

Mandy Nunn, of Gillingham, said: "We aim to make the Ministry of Defence support our armed forces instead of making them redundant.

"There are already far too many homeless ex-services personnel living on the streets of UK and charities who provide food and clothing are already struggling to meet their needs."

Residents are invited to meet at Brompton Westbrook School at 10.40am, before heading to the memorial at 10.50am where a two-minute silence will start at 11am, followed by wreath laying, poems and tributes.
