Age Concern centre in Chatham to close

Age Concern plans to close its day care centre in Chatham on New Year’s Eve.

The charity has begun telling users of the service of the move, which has been branded unnecessary by Medway Council.

The authority found out about the closure after a user of the centre got in touch with a councillor.

An urgent meeting with the chair of trustees is being sought to discuss a solution.

A Medway Council spokesman said: "We are disappointed Age Concern has announced it intends to close as we met them last month offering to underwrite their financial liabilities.

"We strongly feel there is no need to close and that there is a future for this day centre."

The gap in funding is understood to be £20,000.

The centre in Hopewell Drive offers elderly people a communal place to meet and socialise.
