Shock figure reveals extent of mental health problems in the Medway Towns on World Mental Health Day

Shock figures have revealed the extent of mental health problems in Medway with experts urging people to seek help at the earliest sign of difficulties.

An estimated 30,000 people aged between 18 and 65 living in the Towns are suffering from anxiety, depression and other mental health issues.

The number comes on World Mental Health Day today, which highlights the fact that one in four of us will experience a mental health problem at some point in our lives.

Dr Chris Anota, a Chatham doctor and lead GP for mental health for NHS Medway Clinical Commissioning Group, said, mental health was still rarely discussed.

“Mental health problems aren’t visible, and many people will keep it to themselves,” she said.

"We’d like people to think about mental illness and see their GP if they are worried. Often something as simple as talking can help a person who is suffering with anxiety or depression.

"Talking therapies can also help a person who is struggling with everyday life because of bereavement, life events, or a long term medical condition.
