Firefighters called out to free two elderly women stuck in their wheelchairs in Chatham Grove and Deanwood Drive.

In a fluke night for wheelchairs fire crews were called out to rescue two elderly women who were stuck in their chairs.

The separate incidents of wheelchair woe saw Medway firefighters first called to Chatham Grove in Chatham at around 8pm last night.

The webbing straps from a woman's wheelchair got entangled in her medical bed, meaning she could not get away from her bedside.

A carer who was with her at the time called the fire brigade and the crew managed to free her within 15 minutes.

One of the firefighters who attended said: "She was just very relieved to be separated from the bed. But it was very unusual to then be called another similar job."

Less than an hour later the same station got a call from another woman, this time in Deanwood Drive in Parkwood, Rainham.

She was stuck in the back of a vehicle adapted for disabled use.

The chair had been locked safely into position but then the lock jammed, so she could not be reversed back out.

Fire crews disengaged the lock and freed her within 15 minutes.
