Antoni Gaudi inspired lockdown mosaic transforms chalk-worker's cottage in Wouldham

A former chalk-pit worker's cottage in Wouldham has been given a make-over.

Artist Kathleen Keefe got a bit restless while Covid-shielding during lockdown and decided to spruce up her home in Ravens Knowle.

The Victorian cottage now looks prettier than at any time in the terraced home's 142-year history.

Mrs Keefe said: "I am a multimedia artist, and while in lockdown, I decided to do a project that I could create outside when the weather was too hot to stay indoors.

"I started by using stained glass and small glass tiles to mosaic my front doorstep.

"I also used lot's of broken costume jewellery, which I have collected over many years.

"Then friends and neighbours started donating their unwanted pieces to mosaic inside around the doorway.

"When I finished that I decided to mosaic the bottom half of our home. I was inspired by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi."

"I gradually worked my way up to above the doorway and the downstairs window. "

The house has becoming a talking point in the village.

Mrs Keefe said: "It took me two months to complete and during that time I was forever getting comments from neighbours, postman and delivery people."

The glass decorations are well secured with a water-proof adhesive and Mrs Keefe said: "It's harder than concrete, so no-one is going to be able to take it off in a hurry - we'll just have to hope that the people who live here after us like it!"

That is a problem for the future. Mrs Keefe, who has lived in the cottage with her husband for 44 years, said: "We love it here. We have lovely neighbours and great views over a field. We won't be moving any time soon."
