Maidstone United 4 Leatherhead 2

MAIDSTONE UNITED won an astonishing game in Ryman League Division 1 South beating Leatherhead 4-2 at Bourne Park on Saturday.

The Stones raced into a two-goal lead with an Alex Tiesse header on 10 minutes followed by a weak shot by Errison Ahwan that trickled past the Leatherhead keeper Chris Gibson just 90 seconds later.

Leatherhead looked poor but belatedly came to life on the half hour when they pulled a goal back after Steve Sargentt's cross set up Dave Stevens for a side-footed finish.

For the first 10 minutes of the second half Leatherhead dominated with Stones striker Mo Takaloo making three clearances in central defence.

But on 57 minutes the game turned when Ahwan scored with an astonishing 30-yard volley that curled past the arm of Gibson and into the top corner.

Five minutes after that Takaloo set up Tiesse for the Stones' fourth. Gibson appeared to save the shot but then lost the ball and Tiesse hooked it in.

However, the Stones still didn't look entirely comfortable and with 15 minutes to go substitute Julian Thompson forced the ball in after a scramble.

Stones captain Craig Roser claimed he had hooked the ball out before it had crossed the line but the goal was given by the stand-in linesman Barry Fenn who was called into action after the referee was taken to hospital at half-time.
