Maidstone United to move closer to full-time football if they stay in National League

Maidstone United are looking at training three times a week next season - edging them closer to full-time football.

They're one of a tiny number of National League clubs training two nights a week - and one of those sessions is lost if there's a midweek game.

United are fighting to stay up and if they manage it, there's likely to be changes.

Manager Jay Saunders said: “We’ve been talking about it. You look down even to the Ryman Prem and Dulwich do three mornings a week.

“For organisation, for everything, you need that time, whether it be mornings, afternoons or nights.

“We have four hours a week over two nights and we’re playing teams who are in every day. It’s a big ask.

“It’s hard this year, especially when you’re playing on a Tuesday night.

“We send the players reports and videos but you’re relying on them to look at it, then you’ve got 15 minutes before the game to do a team-talk.

“That’s when it’s hard if you’re up against a team who’ve been in on the Monday and have had the chance to go through stuff.

“We’re in a league where you need to do a minimum of three mornings a week, which is near-enough full-time.

“It’s something we’re looking at but we’re more worried about trying to stay up at the moment.”
