Maidstone United midfielder Bobby-Joe Taylor calls for calm heads at York City

Bobby-Joe Taylor has no time for nerves going into Maidstone’s relegation scrap at bottom side York City.

Stones head to Bootham Crescent on Saturday with the chance to climb out of the bottom four and move six points clear of the Minstermen.

It’s another big game and Taylor has called for calm heads.

He said: “I don’t think you can be nervous.

“We all know the situation we’re in and we’ve just got to get out of it.

“Each and every single one of us knows that.

“We’ve got to stick with that togetherness that we had last year, have that mentality and tell ourselves and believe that we’re going to get out of it. That’s all we can do.”

It seems a long time since Taylor gave United the lead against relegated York in a 1-1 draw on the opening day of the season.

City were among the favourites to make a quick return to the Football League, while United were aiming for a top-10 finish in their first season up.

Both clubs have struggled but are doing something about it, signing players to help them out of trouble.

Taylor said: “A lot’s changed since the first day but they’re still a very good side.

“They’ve signed a few, everything’s new there so going to their patch it’s going to be very difficult but we’ll see what they do, work on what we’ve got to do and try and get the three points.”

The 2-0 defeat against Aldershot last weekend ruined Taylor’s 22nd birthday.

The players were all suffering after another defeat but have taken boss Jay Saunders’ words on board.

Taylor said: “Everyone’s got the hump after the game but we’ve got to keep our heads up.

“That’s what the gaffer’s saying - he doesn’t want to see anyone’s head down.

“We’re still well in contention and we can definitely climb out of this."
