Stones nick a win away from home

Godalming Town 0 Maidstone United 1

MAIDSTONE United ground out a result in Ryman League Division 1 South at Godalming on Tuesday night, thanks to a goal in first half injury time from Errison Ahwan.

The Stones lost influential midfielder Sam Tydeman to a hamstring strain picked up during the pre-game warm-up and their captain was badly missed during an uninspired first-half.

Only Nick Hegley looked capable of unlocking Godalming's defence and the winger's 25th-minute shot was the Stones' only serious effort on goal. With Godalming equally bereft of ideas a 0-0 half-time scoreline seemed inevitable, until Maidstone produced a goal from nowhere.

Aaron Lacy's long throw was knocked down to Ahwan on the edge of the six-yard box and he poked in what proved to be the winner.

The second-half was equally drab, but what Maidstone lacked in finesse they made up for with guts, stifling the home side's attackers.

The only moment of alarm came in the third minute of stoppage time when a bungled clearance presented Jamie Laister with an open goal, but he shot wide from outside the area.
