Jay Saunders revealed he is closing in on a new signing after Maidstone’s 3-1 win over Hayes & Yeading.

Stones are fifth in the early National League South standings after Saturday’s victory and boss Saunders intends to build on their promising start by adding to his squad.

He said: “We’re still looking and I’m still talking to one or two. I just think there’s areas we need to be stronger as a squad.

“It’s difficult because there’s people being left out at the moment but if players become available who I think will add to us, it’s something we’ll look at.

“There is a possibility in the week we could have someone in.”

Stones were leading through Jay May’s early header when Hayes’ Alex Osborn was awarded a soft penalty.

It was unclear whether referee Colin Lymer had penalised Lee Worgan or Tom Mills and Hayes manager Tristan Lewis - urging his players to demand a red card - was furious when neither were punished.

His anger grew when Worgan saved Luke Williams’ spot-kick and it all became too much after United broke and won a penalty of their own, with Ed Sanders sent off for bringing down Alex Akrofi who scored from the spot.

Lewis was sent from the dugout soon after and Saunders understood his opposite number’s frustration.

Saunders said: “My first instinct was that it was a penalty, just by Worgs’ reaction.

“But speaking to Worgs and Millsy, they said neither of them really touched him, all three of them kind of collided.

“I think at that point, if he gives the penalty, he’s got to at least book someone.

“I don’t think anyone was clear on what had gone on and I think that was their manager’s frustration.

“Then we’ve broken well after a great save by Worgs and Alex has done very well and got in and got the penalty.

“By the letter of the law it is a sending off but I can see why their manager is frustrated.”

Akrofi’s second goal confirmed Maidstone’s first home win of the season after the 1-0 victory at Hemel Hempstead on Tuesday night.

Saunders said: “If we’d lost or drawn, all of a sudden something becomes made out of it and it’s that little bit more pressure each time for us to get a win.

“Off the back of a good 1-0 win in the week, it’s a good confidence booster.”

With no midweek game, Maidstone will play a behind-closed-doors friendly on Tuesday.
